Russian literature is often dark and morbid, even when it is intended for children. Sometimes it is beautiful and sad, but mostly it is just brutally truthful. This image is the illustration to a story by Vitaly Bianki about a lynx named Murzuk. The White Bear was not a major character. As Olga explains, the illustrators often go around the storyline, offering their own vision in addition to the main plot. Here is a translated excerpt from the book:
The heavy body of the gigantic animal fell out of the cage. Within a moment the bear stood upon his hind legs and stepped towards the American with roar.
