The train departed Vancouver, due to arrive in Toronto within four days of non-stop transit. As we slowly drifted across the Canadian Rockies into the plains of Alberta the landscapes transformed from the coastal lush pine forests into dry grasslands. Enormous mountain ranges got rare, but not less steap. Lone stone giants towered over the plains with their peaks almost as high as the glacier-covered tips of British Columbia.

The light-green hue of the UV protective layer on our window tinted the horisons. I pulled out my camera and snapped this photo. I thought about the incredible railway that stretched across the continent. Through the tunnels and over the bridges. Into the valleys and over ravines again. Two hours later we transitioned into a more conventional midlands of the North America. The sun set over the hiroson covered with birch forests.

As we retired into the dining car with a view through the glass ceiling, one thing became aparent. Train travel is unlike anything else.
